How to Measure Cushions

All measurements should be completed with a sewing tape measure (soft/flexible) for accuracy. All cushions are completed to +/- 0.5” from your provided measurements. Click the titles below to select your cushion type.

Club Cushions

These measurements are for one seat and one back. Loveseat sets are two seats and two backs. Sofa sets are three seats and three backs. If your old cushion has piping, do not include it in your measurements. All measurements should be inside the piping from seam to seam.

  1. SEAT WIDTH: measure the middle width of your cushion from seam to seam.
  2. SEAT DEPTH: measure the middle depth of your cushion from seam to seam.
  3. SEAT THICKNESS: measure the height of your cushion from seam to seam.
  4. BACK WIDTH: measure the middle width of your cushion from seam to seam.
  5. BACK HEIGHT: measure the middle height of your cushion from seam to seam. If you are measuring a chair, the thickness of the bottom cushion should be deducted from the height of the chair from the seat to the top of the back.
  6. BACK THICKNESS: measure the thickness of the cushion across the zipper panel from seam to seam. If your cushion does not have a zipper panel and is pillow style, set your cushion on a flat surface and measure from the surface to roughly the top of the cushion. When stuffed, back cushions will puff out approximately double the noted thickness ie. 3” thick when stuffed puffs out to approximately 6”.

Sectional

  1. Draw an L, like a block letter.
  2. Make a square where the arms meet.
  3. The rectangles will be your regular seats. You can use the Custom Loveseat or Custom Sofa calculator to order these.
  4. The square will be your corner seat. You can use the Custom Deep Seating Seat calculator to order the seat, and the Custom Deep Seating Back calculator to order the backs.

Corner Seat:

When following the method for dividing a sectional, the width and depth of the corner seat are equal to the depth of the other seats on the sectional.

For example, if the seats of your sectional are 24”w x 27”d, the corner seat will be 27”w x 27”d.

Corner Backs:

There are two corner backs required. One is equal to the width of the corner seat. The other is equal to the depth of the corner seat LESS the thickness of the back it will be resting against.

For example, if you have a corner seat that is 27”w x 27”d, one back will be 27”w and 5”t. The other back will be 22”w and 5”t.

Loveseat Set

  1. Measure the total width of the seat frame.
  2. Measure the total depth of the seat frame.
  3. Measure the height of the back cushion. Start from the seat to the top of the back cushion.
  4. From back height measurement, deduct the desired thickness of the seat cushion.

All of our deep seating loveseat cushions consist of two seat and two back cushions. The width of each back cushion and seat cushion are half of the total measured width. All completed cushions seams will be within ½” of the measurement.

Sofa Set

  1. Measure the total width of the seat frame.
  2. Measure the total depth of the seat frame.
  3. Measure the height of the back cushion. Start from the seat to the top of the back cushion.
  4. From back height measurement, deduct the desired thickness of the seat cushion.

All of our deep seating sofa cushions consist of three seat and three back cushions. The width of each back cushion and seat cushion are one third of the total measured width. All completed cushions seams will be within ½” of the measurement.

Dining Chair Cushions, Bench Cushions, Ottomans

If your old cushion has piping, do not include it in your measurements. All measurements should be inside the piping from seam to seam.

  1. WIDTH: measure the middle of the cushion from side to side, seam to seam.
  2. DEPTH: measure the middle of the cushion from front to back, seam to seam.
  3. THICKNESS: measure the thickness of the cushion seam to seam.

Chaise Lounge

Make sure your cushion is completely flat before measuring. If your old cushion has piping, do not include it in your measurements. All measurements should be inside the piping from seam to seam.

  1. WIDTH: measure the top of your cushion side to side, seam to seam.
  2. BACK HEIGHT: measure the middle of the top section of your chaise from hinge to the top of the cushion from seam to seam.
  3. SEAT HEIGHT: measure the middle of the bottom section of your chaise from bottom to the hinge of the cushion seam to seam.
  4. THICKNESS: measure the thickness of the cushion from seam to seam.

Trapezoid Cushions

(i.e. bay window cushions)

Isosceles or three-sides equal:

  1. FRONT WIDTH: measure the front of the seating area.
  2. REAR WIDTH: measure the rear of the seating area.
  3. CENTRE DEPTH: measure at a 90” out from the rear of the seating area to the front of the seating area
  4. THICKNESS: Choose a thickness between 2” and 6”. For a bench wider than 40” at the front, we recommend going no thinner than 3”. For benches wider than 54”, we recommend a 4” thickness, OR dividing into three sections: a rectangle and two right-angle trapezoids.

Right angle trapezoid:

  1. FRONT WIDTH: measure the front of your seating area.
  2. REAR WIDTH: measure the rear of your seating area.
  3. DEPTH: Measure the depth of your seating area.
  4. THICKNESS: Choose a thickness between 2” and 6”. For a bench wider than 40” at the front, we recommend going no thinner than 3”.

Deep Seating Back Cushion

Measuring cushion:

If your old cushion has piping, do not include it in your measurements. All measurements should be inside the piping from seam to seam.

  1. BACK WIDTH: measure the middle width of your cushion from seam to seam.
  2. BACK HEIGHT: measure the middle height of your cushion from seam to seam. If you are measuring the frame of your furniture, the thickness of the bottom cushion should be deducted from the height of the frame (seat to the top of the back). Add one inch for overhang if desired.

Measuring Frame:

  1. BACK WIDTH: measure the width of your frame.
  2. BACK HEIGHT: measure the height of your frame from the seat to the top of the back. The thickness of the bottom cushion should be deducted from the height of the frame. Add one inch for overhang if desired.
  3. BACK THICKNESS: Choose the thickness of the cushion. Back cushions are typically as thick as, or one inch less than, the seat. When stuffed, back cushions will puff out approximately double the noted thickness ie. 3” thick when stuffed puffs out to approximately 6”.
