A Guide to Cushion Storage

As patio season comes to a close, it’s time to start thinking about cushion storage. While Sunbrella fabric is durable, improper treatment can shorten its lifespan. This guide aims to outline the importance of putting away cushions as well as ways to store cushions during the off season. By following this guide, you’ll be able to enjoy the warm weather with your cushions next spring!

Why store cushions?

Since Sunbrella fabric is fade and water resistant, many people think that they can be left out in inclement weather. While this will not immediately ruin the fabric, it does shorten its lifespan. Left out, the fabric is exposed to four season of wear and tear rather than two or three. Additionally, unsecured cushions may blow away during winter storms, or become densely packed with dirt from snow melt. Often, cushions are destroyed or taken by wild animals for their bedding. While the raccoons might be grateful for your generosity, you or your spouse may not feel the same!

Winter cushion storage methods

Now that we know why it is important to store cushions for the winter, it’s time to discuss how. It can help to choose a day where you are doing another outdoor autumn task, like preparing the garden or closing a pool. Once you’ve chosen your day, it’s time to take the cushions off the furniture and start storing them. Depending on the space available to you, there are a few different methods.

Cushion boxes

A solid, lined cushion box is an excellent place to store cushions when not in use. They are protected from the elements and passing critters by sturdy walls and a lining. If the box locks, that ensures that the cushions won’t escape in any strong winds. Cushion boxes are great for storing cushions all year round, and can often match your furniture to provide a cohesive look to your patio.

Basements

If available, a basement is a great place to store cushions for the winter. While not required inside, to avoid bugs or mice getting into the cushions, use a large bag and seal it with a knot or tape. Please be advised that the cushions should be dry prior to going into the bag. For easy storage, consider putting the seats and backs for the same chairs together. This will make unpacking them in spring easy, with no guesswork about what goes where.

Garages

Another excellent place to store cushions is in a garage, or shed. The cushions should be in a large plastic bag for storage to ensure they stay clean from dirt and are hard for rodents to reach. The cushions should be dry prior to being sealed in a bag. We recommend that you inspect the bags occasionally to ensure that no creatures are trying to get inside. If you do notice activity, change the bag and the lstorage location in the shed if possible.

Closets

If you have a lot of closet space, or have no external space, a closet is a great place to keep your cushions. As with the basement, you may wrap them in plastic, though this is not necessary. To save on space, you may want to place back cushions into a bag and compress as much air as possible out of the bag prior to sealing it with tape. The cushions will return to normal after a few days in the  sun and heat, but will be manageable for storage during the winter.
