The Importance of Measuring to Get the Right Size and Fit
If you want cushions for patio furniture that are comfortable and keep their shape, you’ll need to measure them correctly. Don’t toss away your old cushions just yet. They and your furniture will help you decide on dimensions.
Before you start, remember the five most important rules for measuring patio furniture cushions are:
- Take all measurements using a soft/flexible sewing tape.
- Depending upon the type of cushions you need, measure either your current cushions, your furniture’s frame, or the space to be filled (think bench or bay window area).
For old cushions, it’s important to note that with the passage of time and exposure to outdoor elements, fabric on the tops of seats, backs, and pillows will stretch a bit beyond their original proportions. Seams stay more stable, so seam-to-seam measurements are more accurate for most measurements.
- If your old patio furniture cushions have piping, don’t include it in your measurements.
Again, all measurements should be taken inside the piping from seam to seam. - Make sure your cushion is relatively flat before measuring its height.
You don’t need to crush your cushion so it’s as thin as a pancake, but it shouldn’t be unduly fluffed or plumped, either. Back cushions, floor and other pillows will puff out to approximately double your measured thickness when stuffed. - Be as accurate as possible.
Your Northern Patio custom patio cushions will be cut and sewn to within +/- 0.5 of an inch of the measurements you provide, so double- or even triple-checking all measurements is a must.

3. Measure and add the dimensions of your cushions to your order.

4. Add features to your patio furniture cushions for better function or just for fun.
Features you can add to your cushions include:

- Upholstery welting – Also known as piping or cording, welting is a rounded type of trim that’s sewn onto the edges of cushions. Welting hides and reinforces seams, preventing excessive wear along the cushion’s edges. It gives your cushions a more polished look, and when made from a contrasting colour or pattern, it can add super-chic style.
- Seat Fill – Cushions made with our Comfort Fill let you sink into the sort of softness that makes a bad day a distant memory in minutes. Combining Foam + Batting adds softness, structure and smoothness for a flawless look while opting for our Quick-dry Foam + Batting will help keep your outdoor cushions in top shape longer, even if you occasionally happen to leave your patio furniture cushions outdoors in wet weather.
- Buttons – Want to add a pop of panache to your outdoor oasis? Buttons add visual interest, elevated style and charm and make your cushions the focal point of any seating design.
- Corners – Square corners add an air of modern formality, while round corners create a more down-to-earth, casual flair.

- Fabric Direction – While vertical is probably the way to go for single or multicolour stripes on matching club chairs, loveseats and sofa seats and backs, horizontal stripes are perfect for benches, rectangular lumbar pillows and even some trapezoid cushions.
Fabrics that are mostly solid with a three-to-five-inch band of stripes or other pattern down the middle can be flipped horizontally to create a design that adds contrast from armrest to armrest as it appears to flow over one seatback, then another, and another.
5. Choose “Add to Cart.” You’ll see the total price per individual cushion based on all the specifications you selected.
